Day-by-Day Itinerary

01
Arrival – Colombo – Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya

Your spiritual journey begins upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport. After a warm welcome from your guide, transfer to Colombo and visit the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya — one of Sri Lanka's most revered Buddhist temples, believed to mark the site where the Buddha himself visited the island 2,500 years ago. Admire the stunning frescoes depicting Buddhist history and the magnificent Stupa before settling into your Colombo hotel for the evening.

02
Anuradhapura – Sacred Ancient Capital

Drive north to Anuradhapura — Sri Lanka's first ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment — now the oldest recorded human-planted tree in the world, established in 288 BC. Explore the colossal Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba, built by King Dutugemunu in 140 BC, and the Jetavanaramaya Stupa — once one of the tallest structures on earth. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

03
Anuradhapura – Mihintale – Polonnaruwa

Begin the morning at Isurumuniya — an ancient rock temple perched beside a tranquil lotus pond, adorned with exquisite stone carvings including the celebrated "Isurumuniya Lovers". Then travel to Mihintale, the sacred hillside where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka by Arahath Mahinda Mahathera in 247 BC. Climb the 1,840 stone steps to the summit shrine for sweeping views and a profound sense of peace. Continue to Polonnaruwa for an overnight stay.

04
Polonnaruwa Ancient City – Dambulla

Explore the remarkable medieval capital of Polonnaruwa — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The centrepiece is the Gal Vihara, where four magnificent Buddha statues are carved directly from a single granite face: a seated meditating Buddha, a standing colossus, a recumbent Buddha in parinirvana, and a smaller shrine. Visit the Vatadage (circular relic house), Lankatilaka temple, and the Alahana Pirivena monastic complex. Drive to Dambulla and check in to your hotel for the evening.

05
Dambulla Golden Cave Temple – Journey to Kandy

Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex. Over 80 caves contain more than 150 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of gods and goddesses. The gold-plated principal shrines date back over 2,000 years. The murals covering the walls and ceilings are among the finest examples of ancient Buddhist art. Afterwards, travel through the scenic central highlands to Kandy — Sri Lanka's cultural capital.

06
Kandy – Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Spend the morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — Sri Lanka's most venerated Buddhist shrine, housing the tooth relic of the Buddha. Witness the serene daily puja (offering ceremony) performed three times a day with traditional drumming and music. Stroll around the beautiful Kandy Lake, visit the Udawattakele Royal Forest Sanctuary, and explore the city's many temples and monasteries. In the evening, attend a traditional Kandyan cultural dance and drumming performance. Overnight in Kandy.

07
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) – Sacred Night Pilgrimage

Today's experience is one of a lifetime. Depart in the early hours for the sacred climb to the summit of Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) — revered by Buddhists as the footprint of the Buddha, by Hindus as that of Shiva, by Muslims as that of Adam, and by Christians as the footprint of St Thomas. The 2,243-metre mountain draws pilgrims of all faiths who climb the 5,500 steps through forest and cloud to witness the miraculous "shadow of the peak" at sunrise. Return to your hotel for rest. Overnight near Kandy or Ratnapura.

08
Kataragama – Return to Colombo

Travel to Kataragama — one of Sri Lanka's most sacred and mysterious pilgrimage centres, venerated simultaneously by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and indigenous Veddah communities. The Kataragama Devalaya (main shrine) is dedicated to the war god Skanda and draws thousands of devotees each day. Witness the powerful fire-walking ceremonies and kavadi rituals if visiting during festival season. Observe the fascinating blending of faiths at the sacred precinct before transferring to Colombo for your departure. Farewell dinner with your guide.
