Day-by-Day Itinerary
Our guide will transfer you from your hotel in Colombo to Bentota. Relax as you enjoy your day and make use of the hotel amenities. You will spend the night at a hotel in Bentota. The beach at Bentota is famous for water sports including windsurfing, waterboarding, and jet skiing along the Bentara River.
Visit Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site first built by the Portuguese on the south-western coast of Sri Lanka in the late 16th century and extended by the Dutch. The fort is a remarkable exposition of European architecture blended with South Asian styles. Explore the lighthouse, ramparts, and the charming streets of the old town before continuing to Mirissa for your overnight stay.
Mirissa is a stunning crescent-shaped beach and one of the world's premier whale watching destinations. Blue whales — the largest living creatures on Earth — are regularly spotted here, along with sperm whales and playful spinner dolphins. Rise early for your morning boat trip, then spend the afternoon relaxing on the beautiful beach or enjoying water sports.
Drive to Yala National Park — Sri Lanka's most reputable national park, rich in wildlife. You are virtually certain to see elephants, crocodiles, buffaloes, and monkeys. Yala covers a total area of 1,268 sq km of scrub light forest, grassy plains, and brackish lagoons. Embark on a thrilling jeep safari in the afternoon. Overnight in Tissamaharama.
Ella is home to the Nine Arch Bridge — part of the Demodara Loop, 91 metres long and 24 metres high. The nine arches are an astonishing sight, set within a green jungle and agricultural setting with blooming forest behind the railroad and tea leaves grown below. Also visit Ravana's Cave, located about 11 km from Ella town.
Lipton's Seat is an observation point resting high among the hills of Poonagala. Located on one of the hillsides close to the Dambatenne Tea Factory, the lookout offers one of the best views in all of Sri Lanka. Visit the Dambatenne Tea Factory to learn how Ceylon Tea is processed from leaf to cup. Spend the rest of the day resting in your hotel.
Board the iconic scenic mountain train from Ella through the breathtaking hill country to Kandy. Widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful train journeys, the route winds past lush tea plantations, misty waterfalls, and dramatic valleys. Arrive in Kandy and check in to your hotel for the evening.
Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — home to one of Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist relics. Explore Kandy View Point for an amazing panorama of the city and surrounding hills. Then drive to Sigiriya, stopping at the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya along the way. Check in near Sigiriya for your overnight stay.
Visit Polonnaruwa — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sri Lanka's medieval capital. Explore Gal Vihara, featuring stunning Buddha statues carved from solid stone under the reign of King Parakrabahu (1153–1186 AD). Visit the Royal Palace ruins and explore the ancient city's breathtaking archaeological landscape. Return to Sigiriya for overnight.
Climb the dramatic Sigiriya Lion Rock — rising spectacularly from the surrounding plains, this 5th-century royal citadel offers breathtaking views from the summit with its iconic frescoes and Mirror Wall. Then travel to Anuradhapura — Sri Lanka's first ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — for your overnight stay.
Explore Anuradhapura's sacred sites including the ancient Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree, Isurumuniya rock temple, and the magnificent Jethawanaramaya Stupa. Visit Mihintale — the site where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. Then embark on a safari at Wilpattu National Park — Sri Lanka's oldest and largest national park, famous for leopards, sloth bears, and over 200 bird species. Transfer to Colombo for departure.
